Most of us have an excuse which holds us back.

The biggest issue I talk about to my friends is not having enough time.

But let’s face it, I have the same amount of time as Bill Gates and Richard Branson. But I’ve got certain habits which I need to change.

Probably my biggest habit is spending too much time helping other people build their own businesses and not enough time on my own (because I enjoy it so much.

I’ve gotta tell you that up until about 11 Years ago I perceived life & money making as a real struggle. I came from a Professional family: you know:
well educated professional parents, but life was not easy, finances were always tight, we never holidayed overseas, never splurged…. I couldn’t get it… Here were my parents -they were professionals, they spent years & years at university studying really boring stuff, they had to keep these skills updated constantly by attending more “professional development” courses , on top of that they had to work very long hours and bear huge responsibility (as most professionals do), and to thank them for being hard workers the government taxed them to the hilt!! They never lived in abundance; no. it was always work hard/ pay bills…..

“humm lets see” I kept thinking, is this what I want for MYSELF?…it’s kinda mad don’t you think?? The short answer was “HELL NO!” The long answer was “I don’t know any other way of doing it, if I don’t do what my parents wanted for me , if I don’t study hard, get good marks at school, get a university degree & get a good job and then work really hard … “ how else do I ‘make it’, there has to be a BETTER way??”

I did go to university & got myself that colourful bit of paper in fact I became an educator ….but that question ““ how else do I make it, there has to be a better way??” never left me…. And took me over 12 years to figure it out. Today, I have my own family, and I am pretty much doing it my way..…. it was a fun, if you like extreme stuff! through what I learned is literally priceless, I learned some things that made me grow into a better person. mostly I’ve learned about myself and now I am thankful for being a rebel, for questioning the status Quo and for daring to try life from a different angle.
Here’s my summary of the essential lessons I gained along the way this far;

Know what YOU really want, always play to win, and don’t buy into every one else’s BS and for god’s sake don’t listen to well meaning friends and family (unless THEY are leading the kind of life you’d like to lead)! Sounds simple. But that is where most people including myself fall down!

It’s sooo hard to know what you really, REALLY want isn’t? However, this is a critical first step to success, knowing what make YOU happy and what dreams you want to materialize in your life- because let be blunt if you don’t know what you want, how are you gonna get it! You need to be VERY clear about everything you want right down to the last bit of detail- for me it was a clear vision, simple things like the kind of family & home you want to create, all the way to frivolous things like the car you want to drive. new BMW thanks….which now sits in my garage. Such is the power of clear vision.

Know EXACTLY what you want & then go about planning its fulfillment. Simple.

Make your peace with money….
You hear it right! What most of us don’t realize is that “Money” is such a powerful subject for us, we all have very strong opinions About it and while most of us spend up to 80% of our lives just producing it, we tend to live in denial of its importance to us “ money is not important to me” “ money means nothing to me” I hear people say, but they “slave” away for it every day just to make a small handful of the “stuff” and that tell me a different story…. It says ‘Money is our lifeblood”. why else do you get up at the crack of dawn on a cold miserable Monday morning to battle traffic or worse stand on a crowded train for 45 minutes just to get to a job that you mostly hate….I think it’s to do with the money don’t you?

So at this point I suggest you get honest about money & have a good look at how you view money, having lots of it & your perception of wealth….if you think all rich people are thieves & scum bags for example, subconsciously you don’t want to be a part of that and it’d be good guess you have some really negative feelings about money that are holding you back from making any serious money….this area is about soul searching & getting really deep to see how you feel about money. For me, I found it really hard to accept the justice in the fact that some people really struggle to make $40k a year while others can make that in a month with little effort. To accept it as fair, was a personal battle for me, truth is these feelings have sunk many an entrepreneurs who just couldn’t marry their values to their earnings or their deeply rooted ideas to their ambitions.

AND ALWAYS Mind your Own business
That’s right I totally believe that to grow, be more or to make a ton of money you MUST to be in business for yourself. The independence & self reliance involved in doing it your own way is liberating & if you are well researched , and prepared with a lot of determination to succeed then you’ve got a good start. I was going through and cleaning up my computer being the end of financial year and all, and I found these two old articles regarding lost monies being found by ecstatic people, it’s like ” winning the lotto” they said.

I realised that one of my secrets to success was that, when I started in business, I had burned my boat without realising itJ!

I had $254.00 in the bank, I had a quarter of a million dollar mortgage, and $30,000 on credit cards + a car lease for the rubbish Hyundai we were driving, I had a newly unemployed husband, a toddler in tow and I was almost 9 months pregnant – I had nowhere to go but succeed or perish!

Without knowing I burned my boat.

I did what most people would do when faced with that choice. I succeeded.

There was no option BUT to succeed.

I know of a guy who went through a divorce and gave his wife everything.

Robin Hood was my childhood idol. As the most famous English outlaw of all time, he lived outside the protection of the law and was a law unto himself.

I was sitting down reflecting on my personal and professional successes to date, and there’s been many…..it got me thinking…

what is the REAL secret to success? I mean assemble any group of the population. In a business sense, it could be your industry if you’re in one.

…Assemble your entire family if you like.

Take 100 of the richest people on the planet, take 100 of the best tennis players, pick any small country town, any sales force, and the following is what you’ll discover, that’s universally true.

You can divvy the population up in the various groups I’ve described and many other groups, and here’s what you’ll find…

5% are stars

15% are pretty damn good, and

80% are losers and clueless in a sense

If we apply a monetary calculation to what I call the 95/5 rule, it’d go something like this:

5% of any niche or industry finish up with 95% of the wealth.

15% of that niche or industry should be ok as long as they don’t do something stupid (you know how easy it is to do something stupid).

80% graft out a living. And, if you examined 20% of that 80%, you’ll find that they’re virtually broke and clueless. In fact, so broke they can barely afford to pay attention.

The 95/5 rule holds up in sport as well. If you think about tennis and golf, for example, 5% of the elite finish up with 95% of the money. 15% do ok, and the remaining 80% make up the numbers.

Interestingly enough, if you take away all the wealth from the 5%, and divvied it up among the 80%, the 5% will get it all back, and the 80% will mess it up.

It’s not that the 5% is so exceptional or necessarily gifted in some way. It’s more so because the 80% CHOOSE to be so unexceptional.

That’s why when members of the bottom group that Lotto, they don’t seem to get any lasting benefit from their win.

It’s the same when they’re given money, or if you spend money on them.

So why is this so, and what is the REAL secret?

The REAL secret is, is that it’s not a question of money, time and resources… History prooves that there’s more money and resources available today than at any other time in history. Yet, the 95/5 rule has been constant, literally from the beginning of time.

In spite of every advantage that we have today that you can think of, like technology, god (him or herself)… Nothing has changed.

Why…? The REAL secret.

Because, it never has been a question of resources. It will never be the right time to be successful. You’ll never have enough time, you’ll never have enough money, there will always be resources missing – your ducks will never line up…

The REAL secret, the less palatable REAL secret that gives you nowhere to hide, and no one to blame, other than yourself, is because, the REAL secret is:

It’s actually a question of CHOICE, and BEHAVIOUR.

You see, you actually have a choice of which group you are a member of. And your behaviour will determine if you’re a 5er, a 15er or an 80er…

Interestingly enough, these 5%ers and 15%ers are, in every other respect, just as ordinary, boring and dysfunctional as the masses. Their list of flaws are long.

What IS important about them, is their commonalities.

Which are a by-product of CHOICE and BEHAVIOUR.

Although unpopular, this IS the REAL secret.

No need to FIND yourself placed in a group, instead, you have the POWER TO PLACE YOURSELF. Failure to do so will only cost you time you can’t recapture, pain, loathing and money.

The other day, I was going through my photo album and I came across a certain picture I remembered all too well. It was a photo my husband took of me in the year 2000.  As i looked at that that photo a flood of emotions & memories came back to me, let me give you an idea of what I was feeling at the time…

Guilt
Inadequacy
Confusion
Worry
Strain
And hopelessness

There I was sitting cross legged on the timber floor with a frown on my face, a big pile of papers all around me and a bassinette where my baby boy (Jordan) lay sleeping, only a few weeks old.

At that time, we were struggling financially, and living in a cramped,cold unit with very few luxuries.

Our lives were a mess. We had tried dozens of different business opportunities without success. I am almost embarrassed to look back at some of the scams we fell for over the years.

And the more depressed I became about my situation, the tougher it seemed to dig myself out of the black hole I was sitting in.

God I wanted to CHANGE.

I remember going to bed on the night of which this photo was taken and crying myself to sleep. I was so miserable.

Oh God, help me! I prayed. Help me climb out of this rut and enjoy the sort of wealth and lifestyle I know I am capable of. Help me provide a better life for my children.

The next morning I woke up at 6am with a lighter feeling. I had a bounce in my step which came out of nowhere.

And then, just after lunch I was watching television and something just clicked inside of me.

I was watching a show about lost superannuation funds and how this mob was getting paid to track the money for people who were willing to share the bounty. These guys found the money, returned it to their rightful owner and took a percentage of the money found.

It was win-win. Everybody was happy at the end of the transaction. And it was something I could sink my teeth into. After all, if people didn’t claim their money, it would just get handed straight back to the government.

I had a feeling I could do even better. And so I set out to do just that.

It was tougher than I thought because nobody wanted to show me their secrets. Needless to say, I took a lot of wrong turns and hit a lot of dead ends.

But eventually I cracked the code…. slowly, the whole process became easy. And by working no more than 25 hours a week, I managed to get my life to a stage where today…

I run a small business empire from the comfort of my couch (or if truth be told a hammock in my small cottage overlooking the sea in the south pacific where I am right now laptop in hand typing this out:)
I can take time out for lunch to spend with a friend any day I like
I can jump on my private boat and join my husband for lunch on a nearby island
I can stay at home with my children and only work the hours which suit me
I can travel the world and work from my computer anywhere I want
I even have a cleaner twice a week (something I’ve always wanted)

In a nutshell, I’ve got the FREEDOM I never enjoyed before.

I can sit in the pool and work on sunny days. I can spend time with my kids and go to their plays and special events.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m no genius. I just got lucky by coming across this opportunity and had the desperation to develop a system to turn my life around and it was hard work, but boy was it WORTH it!

A Decade ago I did something crazy! 9 months pregnant, toddler in tow and with an unemployed husband…. I chucked in my career as a vocational Trainer (VET trainer) and decided to start my own business!

I chose an industry I knew nothing about, and industry where very little literature can be found ,  and where there was no teachers to guide you….. But, with one of my favourite quotes in mind (“boldness has genius, power and magic in it”) and the absolute conviction that I WILL succeed, I dived in. I spent money I did not have, mortgage and massive credit card debt in tow. My own husband called me “nuts”. What resulted was the most spectacular success I have ever experienced. I was HUNGRY. and my life changed so fast my head was spinning.  inwardly, I was changing and success brought enormous confidence and challenges of the ego that comes with quick success, slowly, I had to learn to be comfortable with success, confidence and money. Outwardly, we were able to dress well, first thing was to out our ‘dog ugly’ hyundai and replace it with a brand new BMW fully optioned, then it was out of cramped unit living and in with stylish home living….. holidays followed, etc.

This was not a short lived success, it grew and has been a 10 year journey, where I have had to learned to redefine success…. and expectations.

The greatest gift I can give in gratitude to my good fortune, is to offer the same golden opportunity to others. To provide others with the road map to the same journey to success I used. Having said that, the map is not the territory. I can give you the map at a cost, but the terrain, the conditions, the health quality of the traveller, the timing/ luck or synchronicity…..well, that differs and makes all the difference in the world also. so I hope to cover the territory in details through my blog.
